A Study On Cystic Fibrosis - 1843 Words

Cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that limits one’s ability to breathe, affects mostly the lungs but also can have a damaging effect on the intestine, kidneys, liver, and pancreas. The name cystic fibrosis comes from the characteristic fibrosis and cysts that form within the pancreas. It is a life-threatening illness, which afflicts around 30,000 people in the United States and about 70,000 worldwide, with approximately 1,000 new cases being diagnosed each year and more than 75 percent of those people being diagnosed by the age of two. Nearly half of the cystic fibrosis population is over 18 years of age, and the life expectancy is between 37 to 50 years old. The ailment, commonly referred to as CF, is a recessive disease, so both†¦show more content†¦One such hypothesis is the heterozygote advantage. Sickle cell anemia, a similar autosomal recessive disease, illustrates this hypothesis. It has been found to protect carriers from other diseases, and it has been spec ulated that people with CF are similarly resistant to certain diseases like cholera and typhoid, which could be why the disease has prevailed for so long. Stemming from a genetic mutation with a membrane pore, or channel that helps to facilitate the transport of bicarbonate electrolytes and chloride from between the inside and the outside of the cell, cystic fibrosis and its inherent symptoms are caused by the loss of the pore channel, which results in inflammation and mucus accumulation. Dehydration of the cell surface also occurs. Normally, cells have a cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator channel that influences fluid secretion in epithelial cells. When this channel is mutated, there is a decrease in the flow of ions and water, and this results in dehydrated mucous that affects breathing. This in turn causes lethal bacterial infections by blocking ducts within the lungs. The most common mutation of the cystic fibrosis conductance regulator is F508del-CFTR. This mutation creates a misprocessed protein that rapidly degrades as it is abnormally retained in the endoplasmic reticulum compartment, therefore making it absent in the plas ma membrane

Internal Control- A Detailed Analysis

Question: Discuss about the Report for Internal Control- A Detailed Analysis. Answer: Introduction Controls instilled within an organization so as to warrant that the business processes are conducted in the most desired manner, the financials prepared are reliable, the operations of the firm are accomplished by adopting an approach which is efficient enough to ensure that the firm is able to meet its goals and targets, the assets of the firm are protected enough to be able to safeguard from any kind of endangers and the processes are stringent enough to prevent any kind of fraudulent activities is what an internal control process promises. Unfortunately installing such procedures in a small organization may be a costly affair and the results may not be as desired. There may be situations wherein implementing such a process may be impossible[1]. In the said case it is very evident that the internal control imbibed within the Ashmore Grocery Store is weak and feeble enough to lead Kate Clarkston towards a path of losses. Thus I was requested to advise Ms. Kate Clarkston on the various internal control measures that she should follow so as to ensure that such a kind of vulnerability is wiped off. Credit (Accounts Receivable) Conducting a business on credit is a very common phenomena in the trade of retail and wholesale, specifically with regards the inventories. However to ensure that the there is no pilferage of the stock, a vigilant internal control system must be in place. The credit worthiness of the customers should be checked in detail[2]. The same should be conducted on a regular basis for both the new customers as well as the old ones as the credit worthiness may change with the changing scenarios. Further periodical follow ups for the clearance of the accounts is a must to prevent the occurrence of bad debts. The authority to grant credit to the customer should be kept by Kate herself and if any sales staff tries to grant credit on his / her judgement then the same should be questioned and dealt with immediately[3]. The next important area which requires attention is the immediate mending of the cash drawer as cash should always be kept under lock and key and adhoc withdrawals without approval should be stalled. Although there is one person responsible for the cash, yet maintaining more than one cash register also points fingers towards a weak control system. This may also lead to confusion and fraud. Thus the three registers should be discarded and only one register should be maintained which should account for all inflows and outflows of cash[4]. Credit- (Accounts Payable) Accounts payable is an equally sensitive area which requires vigilant controls, specially in a business like yours which has a very limited staff. The credit the suppliers give, the amount that they charge for the goods ,how much to order and timely negotiations with the suppliers is a must[5] .In the said scenario, Kate never took stock or inputs from its staff with regards the requirements of the goods each week and ordered in an adhoc manner. The same should be made only after proper stock taking is done. Further Kate should personally view the payments to be made to the suppliers so as to ensure prompt payments are made thus availing the benefit of cash discounts or other benefits that the suppliers offer[6]. Another very integral area of internal control which you need to inculcate is segregation of the work. The office administrator though very old employ should not be entrusted with the work of making payments to the suppliers, counting the cash, and filing of the bank statements. The work should be divided amongst the other staff also and the cash should be counted and banked by you personally. This would lead to applicability of self check process automatically[7]. The same may seem to be a costly affair to you, however if the work is delegated amongst the staff then the chances of risk and errors is minimized considerably. Inventories Inventories is another very fragile area which is prone to frauds thus daily stock taking should be made a part of the normal procedure of a business The stock taking will enable you to have an idea about the goods which are perishable in nature, the duration within which they get perished, the goods which are fast moving, goods which are no more in demand and which needs to be stopped at all. This will save your cost as well as ensure that the percentage of normal loss is minimal. Thus internal control over inventories can be instilled only if the stock is taken on a daily basis and any loss detected is immediately countered for. As the size of your business is small you may find this to be a time consuming as well as a costly affair, yet the benefits are manifolds[8]. Non-current assets Internal controls over non-current assets often takes a second seat in most of the firms which are not too big in size as their is a misconception with regards the fact that these do not hold much importance. But the said notion is incorrect. The fixed assets indirectly help in the conduct of the business and are costly assets which needs to be taken care of and maintained on a regular basis else replacement may cost huge to any entity leading to short term cash crunches as well as financial load. Thus timely maintenance and replacement of the same is the best remedy so that maximum benefits of depreciation as well as production is derived. Further a fixed asset register is a mandate for all kinds of firms[9]. In the current situation Kate uses few equipments such as an air fryer, refrigerator and bain marie which are expensive assets. She does not keep a track of the maintenance and timely repair and replacement of the same. She considers her staff to be so trustworthy that as soon as they inform her about the need for replacement of any equipment, without even checking the validity of the warranty or trying to get the same repaired she prefers to change the same immediately[10]. The same should be checked. Kate should take a note of the same and ensure a periodic AMC of the equipments installed at her shop. The equipment if under warranty should be sent to the company itself who would help to address her issues without any cost to her. Further before replacement a proper analysis of the cost of purchase versus the repair cost should be conducted and then a decision should be taken. She should have ventured into the reason for the replacement of a brand new ice cream freezer before replac ing the same as there may be chances that the same is stolen by any staff[11]. Conclusion Therefore as per my opinion Kate Clarkson should ensure adequate internal control is implemented and made a part of the system of her shop at the earliest. The top line of the firm may take a hit if adequate controls are not put in place before this leads to a larger fraud thus leaving her with no option but to shut down the business. It has to be understood that small business are more prone to inefficient systems and the staffs take the advantage of this vulnerability. Thus Ashmore Grocery Store should ensure that the above detailed measures should be adopted and made a part of its daily routine so that it can prevent profit erosion and earn profits as targeted for. JKL Industries Workplace & Relationship - Samples & Solution

Question: Discuss about theEffective Workplace Relationshipfor JKL Industries. Answer: Introduction: The aim of the report is to make a plan to deal with the issues related to the grievances of the employees at the JKL Industries. It has been found that the management has proposed restructure of the business because it has been observed that the Company is facing certain issues related to the grievances of the employees. The employees had an opinion that they shall lose their job as a result of the restructure of the business. In addition to this, they also fear that there shall be no proper opportunity to retain their employment in the organization. It falls under the responsibility of the HR managers to fight with the challenges and tackle the situation. The report focuses on building up an action plan to tackle the situation. Identification of Risk at JKL Industry: In the case study, it has been found that the organization is facing two major issues. The grievances of the employees have been so drastic that they have also intended to call for strikes. The two most crucial risks that have been identified are: Poor communication and poor organizational climate: The organizational culture has been found to be negative. There is less team cohesion and a large communication gap between the employees and the management. It has been observed that in spite that the managers have good intensions and wanted to make better commitment towards the organization, the employees find it absurd and then they start revolting (Alfes et al. 2013). Therefore, it has been identified that there needs to be development of proper communication in the organization. Weak climate of organization culture: If the organizational culture is taken into consideration, it has been seen that the organization has a weak culture. There is a great deficiency in terms of understanding the situation of the chaotic condition that has occurred in the organization as result of the initiative taken for restructure of the organization (Kessler 2015). When the working atmosphere does not remain in a proper accordance, a chaotic condition is created in the organization that hampers the operation of the business. If the case study of JKL industry is to be considered, it can be said that the complete business operation depends on the cooperation of the employees working in the organization. Therefore, keeping up with their expectation is indeed an important issue that has to be tackled with prime importance. In the view point of Sparrow and Cooper (2012), HR practices are the most evident thing in an organization. Complete business operation remains on the success of the role played by the HR of the organization. Possible Solutions of the Problem: It is important to keep a good relationship with the employees of the Company, so that the flow of work does not get interrupted. Three possible solutions can be narrated in this respect: Detailed discussion with the employees regarding the issue: It has been found that the employees were feeling that they might lose their jobs. This thing has to be cleared out with each employee (Vasilaki et al 2012). In order to achieve this target, it is recommended that the HR management shall call out a meeting with the employees. In the meeting, the manager is expected to explain the issue to the employees and retain their faith. Considering possible solution to the problem: Based on the problems, it is also the duty of the management to come with a solution. The possible remedy might be developing proper communication with the employees and building a proper organizational culture in the organization (Bidwell et al. 2013). Keep a track of the conversation: It is also important that whatever discussion is done between the employees and the management should be recorded as the same can be used for the future prospects as well (Zhu et al.2013). When records are kept, it becomes evident for the management to deal with the situation in future. Promising better opportunity to the employees: The employees have to be convinced about the importance of the restructure of the business and how it can be effective to each one of them. Their misconception has to be removed by the HR management team. If this is made possible, then there is a scope of early recovery of the problem. Apart from the above mentioned solutions, it can be said that the HR should keep a track of the entire organizational planning regarding any kind of change or alteration in the organization (Kooij et al. 2013). It falls under the responsibility of the HR to keep a track of the entire organizational business and make approach to deal with the situation. Keeping a healthy relationship with the employees is the prime responsibility of the HR (Lengnick-Hall, Lengnick-Hall and Rigsbee 2013). Action Plan: Action Timeframe Person responsible Description of the strategy Calling a meeting First day HR and the HR partner In the meeting, detailed discussion of the plan of restricting the business has to be evaluated. Explaining the problems Second day HR and the HR partner Problems should be heard from the employees and the queries have to be addressed properly by the team of management. Coming up with a solution Second day HR and the HR partner It is based on the understanding from both the employees and the management, it is required to come to a proper solution. Fig: Action Plan (Source: Created by the author) Conclusion: It has been found that the main problem that the organization is facing is related to the consciousness of the employees related to their security of their job. The role of an HR manager is to understand the grievances of the employees and take a note of the best possible ways to fight against the various odds of the organization. It should be kept in mind that it is only by fulfilling the requirements of the employees the operation of the complete business can be fulfilled. Therefore, making proper decision regarding the queries and grievances of the employees holds great importance. Reference List: Alfes, K., Truss, C., Soane, E.C., Rees, C. and Gatenby, M., 2013. Shared Trait Between Humans and Chimpanzees Essay Example Essay Example

Shared Trait Between Humans and Chimpanzees Essay Example Paper Shared Trait Between Humans and Chimpanzees Essay Introduction Shared Trait between Humans and Chimpanzees Anthropology 101 Section Fall 2010 Professor Diane Sank For many years, numerous individuals including anthropologists have attempted to explain how a single species evolved into another. From the time of Charles Darwin to Creationism, anthropologists have established that chimpanzees are human’s closet relative. Furthermore, with the extensive voluminous amount of information, not only are chimpanzees genetically and evolutionary similar to human but share analogous traits. For instance, chimpanzees like human make and utilized tools in various techniques. Another trait shared is eutheria, where offspring depend on the placenta and grown internally of their paternities. In addition to the highly mobile digits that assist chimpanzees in grasping and climbing. These illustrations are just a few. This paper is twofold; to highlight humans and chimpanzees shared traits that can aid in recreating the past of humans, secondly to heighten my knowledge of the evolution of humankind and chimpanzees. Human are classified in the primate order. The primate order contains countless species of prosimians, monkeys, apes, and us. Moreover even though humans are classified along with other primates the nearest relative is chimpanzees. Similarly, humans and chimpanzees share, â€Å"anatomy, and genetic material† that has been noted for several years now. By sharing similar traits it is noted as a vital part of human evolution. Human evolution is the development of humans also known as Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens are categorized in the Hominidae family, a family that has shown to ensure increased brain size with complexity and bipedalism. Shared Trait Between Humans and Chimpanzees Essay Body Paragraphs Chimpanzees have undergone many different changes during that resulted in binocular vision, mobile digits without claws but nails, decreasing in sense of smell due to a reduced snout, large and complex brains. Specific traits are illustrated distinctively within humans (Kottak, 2009). The first trait chimpanzees share with humans is grooming. Grooming is the action of cleaning oneself or another. The purpose of grooming among primates has many functions. The first is to clean another while the other is is sharing a bonding experience with a partner or friend. Both primates experience, â€Å"friendless, submission, appeasement or closeness. embracing, touching, and jumping up and down. † These behaviors assist in shaping closeness between the two chimpanzees taking part in grooming (Haviland, Prins, Walrath, amp; McBride, 2005). Two chimpanzees sit face to face with each other and perform these procedures. Chimpanzees use their digits to â€Å"remove parasites or detritus from another’s hairy body surface,† resulting in the consumption of parasites There are different grooming habits among chimpanzees. For instance, some chimpanzees groom each other face to face while other chimpanzee let the one being groomed to move about as they feel. Some chimpanzees use sticks, or leaves as tools for grooming. In humans grooming is also used as a bonding experience for example between mother and child (McGrew, 1998). The second trait is the increase in the size of the brain and complexity. Primates have the highest intelligences. The size and complexity of brain enables primates to retain additional information to utilize in tool making or climbing. The advantages of a large brain with complexity assist in â€Å"navigat[ing].find[ing] food in a highly complex environment. † The brain size of chimpanzees is larger than most other mammals (Kottak 2006; Stanford, Allen, Anton, 2006). The third trait is highly mobile digits. In humans mobile digits a re hands. Chimpanzee’s highly mobile digit allows them to grasp items and climb trees more efficiently. Chimpanzees like human have five fingers on both digits (hands and toes). Primates also have opposable thumbs and tactile pads. Tactile pads empower chimps to have great sensitivity to what they come into contact with. The tactile pads are located at the end of chimp’s digits. Chimps do not have claws but nails (Kottak, 2009). The fourth trait chimps share with humans is tool making. Chimps are every diversified in utilizing and make tools. Chimpanzees construct their tools from surrounding material within the forest such as twigs, bark, and leaves. Tool constructed have multiple functions. For example leaves can be rolled to create a cup for drink water. Another example is utilized leaves for fishing and grooming varies parts of another chimpanzee. Finally leaves can be used in pre –mating procedure and to make medication. Chimpanzees also utilized tools to g ather food such as sticking sticks into the ground to gather ants and termites for food. Chimpanzees are able to use their surrounds to help create everyday task to be performed with ease (McGrew, 1998). The fifth trait chimpanzees share with humans is being eutheria. Eutheria are mammals who reproduce internally via placenta. Similar to human chimpanzees do not have a breeding season. This allows chimpanzees to mate at any time of the year. Since mating seasons do not exist in chimpanzee culture, the majority of female chimpanzees throughout their life becomes pregnant or nurse constantly. Once offspring are born they are: â€Å"Dependent for 4 or 5 years.chimpanzee infant cannot survive if its mother dies before it reaches the age of 4 at the very least. During the juvenile period, young primates are still dependent upon the largest social group rather than on their mother alone, using this period for learning and refining a variety of behaviors. If the juvenile primate’s mother dies, he or she will be â€Å"adopted† by an older male or female member of the social group. † Not only does the infant depend on their mother for a period in time, the community takes care of them as they reach a certain age (Stanford, Allen, Anton, 2006). The sixth trait chimpanzee share is bipedalism. Bipedalism is the art of walking on two legs. This trait is a major trait that has evolved. Chimpanzees usually walk on all fours. However at times chimpanzees walk bipedally when they have to hold something in their hand. Furthermore Chimpanzees â€Å"cannot sustain bipedalism locomotion for more than 50 to 100 yards [before retracting to] knuckle-walking† (Haviland, Prins, Walrath, amp; McBride, 2005). Human infants like chimpanzees walk on all fours, at times walking bipeadlly shortly until they retract to walking on all fours. The seventh trait is the act of playing. The process of playing among chimpanzees is learning skills that can be used later in life as adults. The act of playing is shown not only in infants but juveniles as well. Infants and juveniles play to â€Å"learn about their environment.social skills. [and] testing a variety of behaviors. The act of playing is a tool for learning how certain things work and what is and not accepted in their community (McGrew 1998; Stanford, Allen, Anton, 2006). The eighth trait chimpanzee share with humans is the art of learning. Since the brain of a chimpanzees has increased in size and complexity this trait has assisted in advantages. Younger chimpanzees stay close to their mothers in order to learn how to perform certain task. For example, chimpanzees in West Africa use stones to crack open nuts. At first the offspring fail to perform the task until a great deal of practice is chieved. This process is call aping, the act of observing then imitating the adult they learned from (Haviland, Prins, Walrath, amp; McBride, 2005). The ninth trait is sexual behavior among chimpanzees. Chimpanzees and humans alike are promiscuous. The reason being primates do not have a set partner, another primate to mate with and stay with as a neutral family. Within chimpanzees communities both male and female engage in finding partners to mate with. There is no standard for the men to only look, but women take part in finding a mate rather than waiting for one. Female chimpanzees similar to humans go through several periods in time when they are vulnerable to impregnation. This period in time is known as estrus, not only where the female is vulnerable to impregnation but skin surrounding the genitals swell. In a recent study â€Å"twelve to fourteen males have been observed to have as many as fifty copulations in one day with a single female in estrus†(Stanford, Allen, Anton, 2006). Sexual promiscuity is a norm in chimpanzee’s community as well as humans. In our culture sexual promiscuity is portrayed in the form of pornography. Even though it is frowned upon ind ividuals still take part in it. The tenth trait similar to humans is communication. Chimpanzees have diverse calls that can be visualized with face and body expressions. There are various calls such as, â€Å"warning calls, threat calls, defense calls, and gather calls. [that accompany] gestures and postures.. [that is at] the level of a 2 to 3 –year-old human child† (Haviland, Prins, Walrath, amp; McBride, 2005). Chimpanzee unlike humans cannot speak but they do display language skills incorporating by call and gestures. I have learned that chimpanzees are extremely intelligent and should be studied more often. In my opinion chimpanzees are becoming more and more intelligent than the average American. For example some American can barely read and write let alone communicate their wants and needs. While chimpanzees communicate their wants and needs by using gestures and postures. It is extremely heartbroken more and more primates are slowly being extinct or becoming re search models not to benefit the understanding of their ways but for biomedical research. It truly was remarkable learning about chimpanzees an there shared trait humans’ utilize as of today. I am grateful and wish someday I too like Jane Goodall can do research on primates to learn their ways. We as humans should learn more and take care of our closest relative then would we truly understand their ways and ourselves. Chimpanzees, Pan Troglodytes, have acquired traits that are established already in humans. Chimpanzees are highly intelligent primates who display eutheria, the process of growing their offspring internally. Chimpanzees are extremely social creatures that take part in grooming as a process of bonding with another primate. While infants and juvenile learn through play which creates a learning environment for the children to learn what they will be required to know when they are adults. The increase in brain size and complexity has assisted chimpanzees to make and utilize tools, walk bipedally, and able them to climb and grasp with their high mobile digits. It begs the question: what will the future hold for the evolution of humans as chimpanzees become more and more rick in knowledge? This report contains 9,445 characters and 1,788 words References 1. The guitar essays

The guitar essays The guitar is a fretted, stringed instrument, and is a member of the lute family. It originated in Persia and reached Spain during the twelth-century, where it ¹s versatility as both a solo and accompanying instrument were established. The theory of the guitar was discovered in the early centuries. They found that the sound of a bowstring could be enhanced by attaching a resonating chamber -most like a tortiseshell- to the bow. From the bow came essentially three main types of stringed instruments: the Harp family, which was the sound of plucked strings indirectly transmitted to an attached sound box. The second was the Lyre family, which was strings of a fixed pitch are attached to the directly to a sound chamber. And the third was the Lute family, this was were the pitch of strings was altered by pressing them against a neck that is attached directly to a sound chamber. Within the Lute family came two groups. The lutes proper which had rounded backs and the guitar type ins truments with their flat backs. Guitar-shaped instruments appear in stone bas-relief sculptures of the hittites in northern Syria and Asia Minor from as far back as 1350 B.C. The word guitar also has origins in the middle and far east, deriving from gut, is the Arabic word for four, and tar, the Sanskrit word for string. The earliest European guitars did have four courses of gut strings. A course is a pair of strings tuned in unison. These early guitars were distinguished from lutes by body sides that curved inward to form a waist and by four courses of strings. Some but not all early guitars had a flat back, while lutes always had a flat back. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance the lute was the dominant fretted instrument. The lute with was pear-shaped and had five or more courses of strings was generally regarded as a higher class of instrument. By 1546 the guitar had gained enough popularity to merit the publication of a book of guita...
